Oysters Zanzibar: Bringing Shellfish Farming to East Africa

DBMS presents a public slide show and presentation on Oysters Zanzibar: Bringing Shellfish Farming to East Africa at 7pm on Wednesday July 21st, 2010.

The Duxbury Bay Maritime School is pleased to host a presentation on a project to bring shellfish farming to coastal villages in East Africa. Led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and supported in part by the Island Creek Oysters Foundation, the project seeks to bring shellfish hatchery and growout techniques from New England to the island of Zanzibar in Tanzania. The project team has built a small shellfish hatchery at a marine research lab on Zanzibar; and they are now training Zanzibari marine science technicians in hatchery operations and working with shellfish growers in coastal villages on the island to develop techniques for growing hatchery shellfish to market size in local waters.

The presentation will be given by Hauke Kite-Powell (WHOI) and other project team members, with pictures by David Grossman. Please RSVP to dbms@dbms.org or 781-934-7555.
