Senior Captains Kyle Dame and Jonathan Frye capped off their high school rowing careers at DBMS the best way possible: by becoming Massachusetts State Champions. Along with their boat mates Davis Muller, Chris Scavongelli and coxswain Caroline Hickey, the Duxbury 1st Varsity 4+ beat out 12 other public school teams in Lowell on May 23 for the title.
“I am so thrilled for Kyle and Jonathan and their teammates” said Coach Kristen McCarthy. “They have worked so hard for 6 seasons and have been so committed to their team. This is the first ever State Championship for the Varsity Boys so DBMS is unbelievably proud.” This is McCarthy’s 4th boat she has coached to a State Championship since starting at DBMS in 2007.
Not to be outdone, the Boys 2nd Varsity 4+ (Nick Tinkham, Andrew Whalen, Max Wheeler, Patrick Gearin, cox Kelly McElduff) placed second overall in their division and took home silver medals. The Novice boys (Kyle Archambault, Ian Wilson, Mike Kracov, Steve Kravitz, Gerard Juliano, Jacob Storgaard, Matt Griffin, Will Ederle and cox Brooke Withington) placed 2nd in their heat for the Novice 8+’s and 5th overall in the finals.
On the Girls side, the Novice Girls (Kate Connolly, Veronica McCarthy, Brittany Aylmer, Kelly Juliano, Anna Lake, Georgia Butcher, Rebecca Gooley, Mary Donovan, and cox Sarah Lampert) raced to an impressive 4th in their heat but unfortunately, did not make the finals.
In the 1st Varsity 8+ (Brighid Davis, Emmi O’Day, Anna Grubb, Marley McDermott, Greer Cully, Maggie Dunn, Chrissy Padula, Michele Segalla and cox Kelly McElduff faced a tough first heat and made it to the Petite Finals where they placed 10th overall in the state. The 2nd Varsity 8+ (Nina West, Caroline Foley, Emily Hansman, Lindsey Seewald, Maddie Conway, Hannah Hartford, Karli Tobias, Amy Laputz and cox Abby Armstrong) had a strong finish in their heat and moved to the Grand Finals where they placed 4th overall in the State. “We are expecting great things from these girls in the fall” said Coach Marge Vecchi. “Sadly, we are losing seniors Chrissy Padula and Marley McDermott but with all these Sophomores and Juniors moving up, we should have a really strong showing in September.”
